This workshop, delivered by Professor Gregory Shaffer, will discuss the methodology used in his new book Emerging Powers and the World Trading System: The Past and Future of International Economic Law (CUP 2021).
This methodology comprised a multi-method qualitative approach involving three extended case studies — those of Brazil, India, and China and their links with the transnational legal order for trade. This work involved elite interviews and field work on trade policymaking and dispute settlement in Brazil, India, China, the United States, and Europe, and particularly in Geneva. It was combined with a survey, descriptive statistics, participant observation, and a review of primary and secondary materials.
